Kunst naar de jongeren brengen en de jongeren naar kunst

Door de videoclip Thriller van Michael Jackson is het voor Nikki allemaal begonnen…  haar eerste danspasjes. Jarenlang heeft ze in een hiphop-crew wedstrijden gedanst, waaronder de Nederlandse, Europese en Wereldkampioenschappen. Crews met dezelfde ambitie als die zij toen had, begeleidt Nikki nu als trainer en als coach. Als danser vindt ze dat je allround moet kunnen zijn. Om die reden heeft ze gekozen om een klassieke & moderne dansopleiding op Aventus (mbo) te volgen om daarna Docent Dans op ArtEZ te kunnen volgen.

Het lichaam heeft haar altijd geïntrigeerd. Haar onderzoek ging dan ook over: dans en het lichaam.

Nikki’s doelen voor de toekomst omvatten verschillende aspecten. De jeugd in aanraking brengen met kunst is voor haar het belangrijkste doel. Jeugd die niet per se kiest voor kunstuiting, maar uiteindelijk enthousiast kan zijn.

En de jeugd die wel zelf kiest voor bijvoorbeeld dans, zou ze willen stimuleren in zelfexpressie en willen begeleiden in hun toekomst. Nikki heeft voor zichzelf een hiphop-methode ontwikkeld die daarbij aansluit en dicht bij de cultuur zelf blijft staan.

Building a bridge between young people and the arts

For Nikki, it all started with Michael Jackson’s Thriller video…  her first dance steps. For years, Nikki danced in competitions in a hip hop crew, including the Dutch, European and World Championships. Nikki now trains and coaches crews with the same ambition as she had back then. As a dancer, she believes that you have to be all-round. For that reason, she chose to do a classical and modern dance training programme at Aventus and then proceed to the Bachelor Dance in Education programme at ArtEZ.

Nikki has always been intrigued by the body. No surprise that her research focused on: dance and the body.

Nikki’s goals for the future have several aspects. Her most important goal is to bring youths in contact with art. Youths that may not necessarily choose to express themselves through art, but may end up being very enthusiastic.

And youths who do choose, for example, to pursue dance, she would like to encourage to express themselves and coach them towards their future. Nikki has developed her own hip hop method that links up to that goal while remaining close to the culture itself.
